Since 2012, I’ve been designing and producing bold, made-to-order apparel in Lancashire, drawing inspiration from the iconic sounds and visuals of acid house. The History of Acid House
Acid house emerged in Chicago in the mid-1980s, pioneered by artists like Phuture and DJ Pierre, who experimented with the Roland TB-303 synthesizer to create squelchy, hypnotic basslines. The genre quickly crossed the Atlantic and found a new home in the UK, where it sparked a cultural revolution.
- UK Arrival: Acid house landed in the UK in the late 1980s, igniting the “Second Summer of Love.” Legendary nights at clubs like Shoom, The Haçienda, and Spectrum brought together a generation of ravers. The music’s repetitive beats, psychedelic sounds, and inclusive ethos became the soundtrack of a movement.
- Visuals & Style: Acid house is instantly recognizable for its use of neon colors, smiley faces, and playful, psychedelic graphics. Fashion was all about loose fits, bold prints, bucket hats, and anything that stood out under UV lights. The look was fun, rebellious, and designed for all-night dancing.
- Legacy: Acid house laid the foundation for the UK’s rave and club culture, influencing everything from techno and house to drum & bass and jungle. Its visual language remains iconic, and its spirit of unity and positivity continues to inspire new generations.
