Dub & Dubstep Streetwear – Inspired by Bass Culture

Dub & Dubstep Streetwear – Clothing for Bass Music Lovers

Dream But Do Not Sleep® is a UK streetwear brand rooted in dance music and club culture. Since 2012, I’ve been designing and producing bold, made-to-order apparel in Lancashire, influenced by the deep rhythms and bass-heavy sounds of dub and dubstep. If you’re into graphic tees, hoodies, and accessories that channel UK bass music culture, you’ll feel right at home here.

The History of Dub & Dubstep

Dub originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s and early 1970s, evolving from reggae through experimentation with echo, reverb, and heavy bass. Dub producers like King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry stripped tracks back to their rhythmic foundations, creating spacious, bass-driven soundscapes. Dub’s influence spread worldwide, shaping everything from punk to electronic music.

Dubstep emerged in South London in the late 1990s and early 2000s, taking inspiration from dub, UK garage, jungle, and grime. Producers like Skream, Benga, Digital Mystikz, and Mala gave the genre its signature sound: syncopated rhythms, sparse atmospheres, and powerful sub-bass drops. The scene grew through pirate radio, underground clubs like Plastic People, and the legendary DMZ nights.

  • Sound: Dubstep is all about bass—the kind you feel in your chest. The genre is known for its half-time rhythms, dark atmospheres, and experimental edge. Dub’s influence is clear in the use of effects, space, and a focus on rhythm and vibe.
  • Style & Culture: Fashion in the dub/dubstep scene leans towards streetwear with a utilitarian twist—hoodies, oversized tees, caps, and minimal, often monochrome palettes. The look is about comfort, individuality, and a nod to the underground.
  • Legacy: Both dub and dubstep have had a massive influence on UK and global music culture, shaping everything from grime to techno. Their emphasis on bass, experimentation, and community continues to inspire new generations of ravers and producers.

At Dream But Do Not Sleep®, the creative, bass-driven spirit of dub and dubstep runs through many of our designs.
